Why did denny laine leave wings

Mean-spirited people might note that McCartney might have done as well out of Holly Days as his then-friend Denny Laine. And, that without another albums we would fade away into obscurity. But I still have a good relationship with the band today. How did your involvement in Wings come about? Well, we knew The Beatles because The Moodies were one of the opening acts on their second tour. I knew George very well, he was a close neighbor, and I became friends with Paul who had seen me performing as an opening act for Jimi Hendrix at the Saville Theatre. And because he was impressed with seeing me trying to do something different onstage with my Electric String Band, and because we became friends, that inspired him to call me because he wanted to do something new and different…..

Do you have a favorite album you did with Wings or a favorite memory of your time with McCartney and the band? At the time, everything you do is your favorite.

As musicians, it was just Paul and me and the input I had on that album that made it special to me. One thing that did stand out for me with Wings was doing these large stadium tours that I had never done with the Moodies. Wings was one of the first bands in the s to do stadium tours, as well as Led Zeppelin. So some bad blood was brewing in that camp. Also apparently Linda didn't want to tour and was starting to dislike the whole idea of being in Wings but probably equally didn't like the idea of Paul and Denny forging ahead together knowing that Jo Jo would be in the picture.

So probably as early as or at least by 78, Wings was starting to unravel. Also at this time Paul got a new recording contract with Columbia Records. It should be noted that only Paul had a recording contract with Capitol The same was true in the new arrangement. And the contract was HUGE. But apparently the arrangement as far as payment to Wings members remained the same. But the promise of another huge world tour was enticing to Denny and the other members. Of course that went to hell after Paul's bust and of course that summer he released McCartney II which further pushed the idea of Wings aside.

So let's look at it this way for a second They dig each other and have a great time together and make some amazing music together. Denny isn't all that concerned with money at the time because he too was a hippie type who just wanted to make music, man. But the ladies in their lives made it harder to have this kind of relationship for various reasons. And Denny made some bad choices financially Also he most likely lived beyond his means well after Wings weren't going to tour.

So he sold his rights to pay off his debts and to live on. But his Mrs. Meanwhile Paul is in 'family values mode' in the 80s while trying to downplay his druggy lifestyle and past and more interested in setting a good example. This was a major affront to Paul's reputation.

And Paul being Mr. PR decided to start downplaying Denny's involvement or value to the Wings years. Denny apparently stumbled around for quite a few years but about 10 years ago or so seemed to have his life together enough that he started performing really great shows again and embracing the nostalgia aspect of his career and talking very positively about his years with Paul.

During this time was when he met up with Paul at the UB40 concert and apparently they stayed in touch over some of the reissues, etc. He does go to great pains to name every member of the band and track departures and new hires.

You have to be. I think [wife] Linda helped him a lot with that. They went up to Scotland and kept out of the public eye as much as possible. Tried to live a simple life outside of fame. What are some highlights that stand out from your time with Wings?

The minute we started doing arenas it was amazing. We proved to the world we could get up there at that level. That was the best thing in the world. The other thing, of course, was making albums. Right, so how did it happen to be just you and Paul?

I read he got robbed in Lagos? He got robbed. Walked away. It was me and Paul in the studio putting backing tracks down. We [went] places where EMI had studios — it was like going on holiday. We had Geoff Emerick with us, a Beatles engineer. So was he hurt in this robbery? What happened?
