Meanwhile real Ayu is there with a wish ready for when Yuuichi gets a heroine. Best wingwoman. She even helped Yuuichi get with herself! I am understanding a bit more with her route that Ayu was wanting to treasure those memories with Yuuichi ever since the seven years that they spent together but she was really afraid to accept the happiness given to her knowing how lonely she felt throughout her life and that Yuuichi had to leave the town.
He needed to understand the real reason why he had to go back to the snowy town and the time he used to remember when meeting Ayu for the first time and how much those irreplaceable times that he could call her first love meant for him. I really do love this route very much and yet it has still managed to give me the feels after this whole time replaying Kanon as a whole.
I would rate this route a 5 out of 5 for me because it shows that despite the moments that Yuuichi and Ayu had with each other held together in the pacing of the story and how it kept me as a reader to experience the memories that flowed through the town Yuuichi had eventually come to love in the end.
Ayu feels familiar, because Yuuichi knew her as a child, but now sees her in the context of a highschooler. We also get to see Ayu in a lot of contexts in the story. We see her in the shopping district, she visits Yuuichi at home, she wanders around town with Yuuichi, and we even see her as a child. Basically, within her arc and beyond it, the readers get a ton of indications that Ayu is the most important character in the story.
Personally, I find it very successful. Ayu really does feel like the most iconic Kanon character, and probably the most iconic Key character in general, because she appears in so many contexts. She is ubiquitous, and familiarity breeds not contempt but compassion. How much of that do you feel is necessary for the plots of those characters, and how much do you think is there to manufacture a sense of connection, either between the audience and the character or between Yuuichi and the character?
Back to the good stuff. The color red is a pretty big motif in this route. Her eyes, her hairband, red bean paste , her face after running into things , and the descriptions of the snow and sunset. I thought it was cool that they showed this with color even though it was bloodstained…. Even though her body aged while she was in a coma, her mind did not, which is really good writing.
Maybe Yuuichi struck her as an untrustworthy person, and in her childish mind she believed that if he pinky swore, he would be bound by the sacred covenant of uguu to keep his promise. I think for those of the characters are very significant with their connections with Yuuichi because it serves as an establishment of how he felt close to each of their situation and for him to feel that his memories would change the way of how he felt about the snowy town despite losing his memories.
I was struggling to answer this but I gave it a shot anyway but this is only what I can think of the moment as I was playing her route. This one works much worse without prior knowledge, obviously it hits at the coma, but there is nothing to really interpenetrate otherwise so it must seem a bit strange to firties…. For hours.

Man why is Akiko worst in her own daughters route and way better in routes involving random girls coming to live in her house? There are people who might not find this as good, but I love it.

Say it fast! Sounds like a fast car or something! Ayu is my favorite character in Kanon, hands down. She is also one of my favorite Key characters. No matter what route you play, you are guaranteed to see her at least once. While they are similar in many respects, there is a big difference in what they enjoy, what their goal is, and their connection and relationship to the protagonist.
The way Ayu speaks and thinks is always so fascinating, even to Yuuichi. The problem is that Ayu does not act boyish at all. She is more energetic and boisterous than the majority of the female cast, but she is still quite polite and does act like a little girl should at points, such as when she overreacts to Akiko-san getting a cold.
There is, however, one problem with the wishes she makes. Her first wish is that Yuuichi will never forget her. Okay, cool. Her second wish was to go to school with Yuuichi. Her final wish was to have Yuuichi completely forget about her.
Wait, what? While Yuuichi has certainly changed since then, Ayu still recognizes that some part of his past self still remains. However, the fact that she is, in essence, a figment of her own imagination disheartens her, and puts a bit of a roadblock in her relationship with Yuuichi. When she makes her final wish, however, she forgot that she had made Yuuichi promise to never forget her. He did, and he was able to greet her when she woke up. One more thing about the ending that bugged me was the differences the visual novel and anime had.
It was acknowledged in both media that Ayu broke her back when she fell off the tree. In the anime, they show her paralyzed from the waist down in a wheelchair. But what does the visual novel show? Her sitting on a bench, with no injuries at all. What the heck?
