Hi again, Received your email that you are now in Thailand and will be heading out. So glad to once again know that all is going well. Your blogs are impressive and so interesting. Even got GP involved in reading and enjoying them. Stay well. Sending lots of love.

Grandma Harriet. Thank you, Grandma Harriet! We are excited for the beach. Sending hugs and love to both you and Grandpa Frank! Nice comparison! I went to Plitvice but not Krka and I was pretty disappointed to miss Krka. Mostly I really wanted to swim in those amazing waterfalls! You definitely chose the right one in my book! The swimming is a pretty great benefit to Krka, though—at Plitvice it took a lot of self-control not to touch the water!

Have you heard of Rastok, it is part of the Plitvice river network but approximately 30 minutes north of the National Park and is a village built on a network of waterfalls.

Went last year from Australia and is. According to Wikipedia , the Plitvice Lakes are different because they do not represent separated, stationary waters. The lakes are always been seen as one composed system of lakes. Due to constant changes it is not even possible to pursue individual analyses of single lakes. The water masses reaching the lakes at the upper or lower part of the system are continuously changing the outlook of the lakes and the surrounding landscape.

They finally exit the lakes as river Korana. On the one hand, chalk tufa is being washed away partly. On the other hand, new sediments are continuously being formed.

Thus, new waterfalls are being formed while others run dry. Nature itself is continuously adapting to these new conditions. As a whole, the complex of lakes represents a very sensitive and labile ecosystem. Hope you enjoyed the post — thought it would be a good start to explain the science behind the Plitvice Lakes.

The Wikipedia page included a string of formulas on tufa formation, but I thought it would be a tad much for a blogpost. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania make for great holiday destinations. There are seven different loops to tour the lake system and four hiking trails to choose from, which makes it easy to get away from the crowds. Budget at least six hours for a visit, which allows time to explore both the lower and upper lakes, take the free boat ride across, and stop for lunch and plenty of photo-ops.

The boat that takes visitors across a lake in Plitvice. It only takes about an hour for the whole walk, which makes Krka a good option for families with young children. It takes less than two hours to drive from Krka National Park to Plitvice Lakes, on the speedy, well-maintained D1 highway.

Krka National Park is easily accessible from some of the major cities in Croatia, which makes it a great day trip from:. If you only have time for a quick day trip, Krka is usually the winner here. Not only is it closer to most major cities, but the national park itself is smaller than Plitvice.

That means even if you only have a few hours, you can see most of the highlights and still have time for a swim without experiencing serious FOMO. To beat the crowds, the best time to visit the Plitvice Lakes waterfalls is early in the morning or late afternoon, to avoid the tour buses and crush of people queued up to take the boat back across the lake. During mid-day, that line can sometimes stretch for over an hour, so you might be better off grabbing a snack at the nearby concession and waiting until it dies down a bit.

Very few places on earth have waters as clear as Plitvice Lakes, and this clearness is created from the mountain runoff that forms the pools. The water calcifies all that it touches, and this stops buildups of mud and algae. The colors are astounding spectrums of teal, greys, deep blues, and greens, and this is thanks to the mineral composition of the area. If you are drawn to the water, then consider renting a rowboat for fifty km per hour that's roughly seven bucks!

Float and row around the pools on a sunny day! Plitvice Lakes are the perfect backdrop for a picnic. You are welcome to bring your own snacks in, just be sure to deposit trash in the appropriate spaces.

Food is also available at the entrance of the park, but the selection here will be limited.
